Monstrous Couta on Kayak

The Fish of a lifetime….400 metres apart from previous fish of a lifetime.

Trevor Pitt caught this incredible 35.2kg Couta at Umdloti last week fishing from his kayak and the videos and pics have since gone viral. Here is the story in Trev’s words.
Fishing out of Umdloti, KZN, I got him on a dead mackerel on the other side of the river mouth. You know, when he took, he screamed off and took probably 400 meters of line, but it was right at the end when I saw the knot on the spool, and I mean, I was just holding it with two fingers.I managed, he just stopped miraculously before he took the line completely and I got him. And then, obviously I got him to the boat, but then I’ve got to get him in the kayak, and that's tricky. He's a big fish, and I had a trailing treble, which I knew was there somewhere. I couldn't get to it, I couldn't cut it off. I had to kill that fish, so I put the knife through his head and the knife blade broke off in the fish's head, I managed to get him over my lap, and he nearly went over the other side of the boat. I don't know how I got him in the, in the hatch, but I did. And then he jammed in the hatch, so he's stuck in there, and I managed to twist him slightly sideways, and twist him up so that he would go further in the hatch, otherwise he wouldn't have even fitted in the hatch, and then still had to get him to the beach. The biggest danger in the whole ordeal was the trailing treble which I couldn't get off, and I had to pull that thing over my lap, and I didn't know where that treble was. And obviously if that treble hits you, you're in trouble. Anyway made it to the beach and the rest is history.

The interesting thing is that I caught my previous Personal Best Couta of 34kg about 400m away from the same mark around the same time of year, just a few years ago.
So even once you have caught a PB don’t stop fishing for another!
